Reflections on The Psalms

Psalm 45

{1}My heart is inditing a good matter:
I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

{2} Thou art fairer than the children of men:
grace is poured into thy lips:
therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.

{3} Gird thy sword upon thy thigh,
O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty.
{4} And in thy majesty ride prosperously
because of truth and meekness and righteousness;
and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.

{5} Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies;
whereby the people fall under thee.

When you start this psalm, it seems a poet is writing about David, or perhaps Solomon. But then there is this which changes our perspective entirely.

{6} Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever:
the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.
{7} Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness:
therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Not only is our perspective changed, but a surprising new piece of information. The psalmist, who may himself be King David, is writing about his king, who is God. Your throne, he says, is eternal. But then, still speaking of God, says, “therefore, God, your God, has anointed you.” So we have one who is called who also has a God. Someone once wrote that no one, working from the Old Testament alone has ever come to a doctrine of the Trinity. That’s true, but that’s not to say that the Old Testament never suggests that there is more than one who is called God.

And lest we misunderstand, the book of Hebrews in the New Testament removes all doubt:

"But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows." (Hebrews 1:8-9 KJV)

{8} All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia,
out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.
{9} Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women:
upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir.

Who is this queen? It is hard not to make the connection to the bride of Christ:

(Revelation 21:2-11 KJV) "And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. {3} And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. {4} And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. {5} And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. {6} And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. {7} He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. {8} But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. {9} And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will show thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. {10} And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, {11} Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;"

Perhaps we can see why the psalms are often considered to be prophetic.

{10} Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear;
forget also thine own people, and thy father's house;
{11} So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty:
for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.

{12} And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift;
even the rich among the people shall entreat thy favour.
{13} The king's daughter is all glorious within:
her clothing is of wrought gold.

{14} She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework:
the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee.
{15} With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king's palace. {16} Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children,
whom thou mayest make princes in all the earth.

{17} I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations:
therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever."
